When does opinion become defamatory?

OMG. Two Malaysian bloggers, Jeff Ooi and Rocky’s Bru, have been sued by the New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

I immediately thought they made some racist/religious-hate comments on their blog. And I thought of pulling out all my posts on religion and race.

But it’s not. The NST Press is claiming that both bloggers defamed a few of the top officials.

Gosh. I don’t know what’s happening to free speech in Malaysia. Dent the huge ego of a person and you get sued.

Defamation is damaging a person’s reputation by spreading false and inaccurate accusation and information. So does that mean that if I blog about my opinion on some famous guy, or any guy for that matter, I run the risk of being sued for defamation? When does my opinion become defamatory?

For example, if I say “Datuk Michelle Yeoh is the worst dressed celebrity I’ve ever seen”, can I be sued for defamation?

p/s – BTW, I do NOT think Datuk Yeoh is the worst dressed celebrity. I retract my earlier comment. Yes, I’m a scaredy cat.
